DUNLOP PARK ANGUS STUD

2010 On Property Helmsman Auction

Friday March 5th, 11.30am

21 HBR Bulls, 2 Commercial Bulls

Welcome to the 2010 Dunlop Park Online Sale Catalogue.

Once again we are pleased to offer a range of bulls from which individuals can be selected for a range of production systems.

We are serious about offering a genuine alternative in sire lines to those found elsewhere. This is not a criticism of other breeders stock; it is pleasing to note that Tasmanian Angus cattle have a reputation for quality that is known about even in Scotland! The reason we like to offer an alternative is to give producers a choice and an opportunity for an outcross, without compromising growth, carcase attributes and above all profitability of their cattle.

This years sale bulls have grown up under difficult conditions. A shortage of feed due to the dry conditions in autumn meant that they were weaned early. It wasnıt until spring that we received any decent rain, and now we are once again facing very dry conditions and a shortage of feed. However it pleasing that our bulls can still perform under such trying conditions.

The beef industry has been through some tough times in recent years, however like all agricultural enterprises these things go in cycles. We are optimistic that the next few years will see an improvement in the industry.

We welcome inspection at any time, and you are most welcome to share a cup of tea with us when you come. But if you canıt make it before hand we do look forward to seeing you at our sale on March 5th.

Best Wishes

The Stewart Family

The Helmsman Auction System

Dunlop Park uses the Helmsman system to sell our cattle. This is a buyer friendly system that is becoming increasingly popular for stud sales both here and interstate.

The Dunlop Park Helmsman Auction will start at 11.30am

How it Works

1. Buyers register at the bid table and receive a buyer number, as with old style auctions.

2. Cattle are displayed for inspection as usual, with relevant information provided in the catalogue and on the supplementary sheet.

3. When the sale starts all the bulls are on the market simultaneously. They are listed on a white board in a central position and buyers may bid on any bull, regardless of lot.

4. You may open bidding on any bull at the reserve price displayed on the board and contest bids in multiples of $250.

5. Bids are recorded with the buyer's number on the white board adjacent. You can bid on any number of bulls at once and can see at a glance whether your bid still stands or has been overbid.

6. There is no pressure to commit yourself to another bid. If your first choice bull goes over the limit you can still bid on any other bull in the sale.

7. A bid once submitted and recorded cannot be retracted, and the person submitting such a bid will be responsible for it until it is overbid.

8. The sale will remain open for a minimum of 30 minutes. A bid registered in the last 2 minutes will result in a 2 minute extension of the selling time. Further 2 minute extensions are made after any new bid. The sale finishes when there are no further bids within a 2 minute extension period or at the discretion of the auctioneer.

Dunlop Park Cattle are:

Bred to do well in commercial conditions

At Dunlop Park we breed cattle for commercial conditions. They have been selected for generations to do well in these conditions. We economically and efficiently produce cattle that consistently meet the highest grades as carcases. If you believe that the performance of our cattle is due to our management rather than genetic selection we are still worth a visit because whatever it is that we are doing correctly it is working. So please drop in some time and have a look, you would be most welcome.

A Genuine Alternative in Sire Lines.

If you buy a Dunlop Park bull you will be getting an animal that is a genuine alternative to the narrow range of AI bulls now being used, yet an animal that comes from a herd that has been proven to perform well under all conditions from generation to generation. We have deliberately chosen different lines so that buyers can be assured of genuine alternative when it comes to buying a bull.

Keeping the famous Angus characteristics

Over the years we have gradually increased the size of our cattle while maintaining the low birth-weights, structural soundness, marbling, feed efficiency and carcase quality that Angus were once renowned for..

Data in this Catalogue

We present as much phenotype or actual performance data as we can in this catalogue. Phenotype is a combination of the genetic makeup of an animal and the environment. Given the tough dry conditions we have had most of the performance of our bulls can be put down to the genetics. But basically phenotype correlates with genotype; if an animal doesnıt have the genetics it will not have good performance data. So we are quite proud to present our actual data.

We have included group breedplan data in the back of this catalogue for those who use it. We often forget the word group when talking about group breedplan. To achieve accurate and reliable group breedplan figures you need one of two things,

either      i) an animal with a large number of progeny and/or parents with a large number of progeny;

or        ii) linkages to animals in other herds with a large number of progeny.

Unfortunately as we use home bred bulls or genuine out cross bulls we can fulfill neither of these conditions, so very good animals go unrecognised by group breedplan.

The Dunlop Park herd has far fewer linkages to other herd s than most herds using group breedplan, therefore making a comparison between animals in our herd and other herds can often be difficult and unfair. However if you feel that breedplan is a useful tool then you can use the data to compare animals within our herd.

Breeding Program

At Dunlop Park our breeding program is decided based on selection using a number of factors

Recorded Data

We record birth weight, weaning weight, weight at scanning, scrotal circumference and weight at sale. We scan for EMA and IMF.

Visual Assessment

This is ongoing and involves continual assessment. We normally make a final decision on which bulls and heifers are used in our herd around 2 or 3 months after weaning.

Selection is for temperament, thickness, structural correctness and feet.

Feedback

We follow up carcasses of our stock in the abattoirs as well as observing how cattle bred from our bulls sell at auction. Dunlop Park bred stock continually receive a premium at auction.

Pedigree

Knowing which lines display a particular trait, for example marbling remains a valuable selection method.

Genestar

We are using Genestar to identify animals that carry genes for traits such as tenderness, marbling and feed efficiency. We see this as an extra tool in identifying an animals genetic potential which enhances rather than replaces other methods of selection
